Sally A. Sherman, Ph.D. is conducting a research study to compare the energy demands of a Pilates mat class to brisk walking in adults who regularly practice Pilates.
Energy Expenditure in Pilates vs. Brisk Walking

Participation involves two visits. At the first visit, we will measure your height, weight, and body composition using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), a quick, painless, and non-invasive method. During exercise, we will use near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), which uses light sensors placed on the skin to measure oxygen use in the muscle, and electromyography (EMG), which uses small sensors placed on the skin to measure muscle activity. Neither method involves needles. One visit will involve a Pilates mat class, and the other will involve a session of brisk walking.
This study will help researchers better understand the energy and muscular demands of Pilates compared to more traditional forms of exercise like walking.
Who can participate:
Adults ages 18–55 who are regular practitioners of Pilates.
What to expect:
- Two study visits
- Non-invasive measurements: height, weight, BIA, NIRS, and EMG
- One visit includes a Pilates mat class; the other includes brisk walking
- $150 compensation upon completion of both visits
